The price of a jar tuna rose quite a few years ago and it is possible that it will soon be again.
Even this fall, tuna prices seem to have already been drowned up.
Sales manager Mikko Kovalainen The S Group’s Market Shop says that the findings on rising tuna jars are partly true. Kovalainen repeats how and why the price of tuna has been swinging briskly in recent years.
Demand for jar tuna increased a lot in the early days of the corona pandemia when the can of jar food was bought for home. The high demand was followed by a shortage of can and prices.
– 2023 prices were really high because the price of oil had risen and the fish catches were low, says Kovalainen.
In 2024, tuna catches were good again. The prices of a cans of tuna fell, which led to the rise of consumption at the end of last year.
The price increase threatens
The tuna situation is once again very different from a year ago.
– The current problem is that it has not been possible to produce as much product as demand, so prices can turn again, Kovalainen says.
– The latest information about tuna is that fish catches are a bit smaller than the previous year and the size of the fish is also smaller than before.
If the old signs are correct, the price of a cans of tuna will rise again.
– You can draw your own conclusions from this, Kovalainen follows reading the characters.
K-Group Grocery Store Selection Manager Marjo Jäske Tells to an email that changes in tuna prices are due to variations in packaging material and raw materials and the transition to MSC certified raw material.

In the water or in oil?
The price of a jar tuna is essentially influenced by the size of tuna catches and individual fish, the price of packaging materials and the fluid to which fish is preserved.
The cheapest is tuna canned in water.
The tuna preserved in water is usually exactly the same tuna as the tuna packed in an oil of the corresponding brand. However, there are big differences in the taste and nutritional content.
The tuna in the water contains less fat and calories than in oil. Oil tuna, on the other hand, often has more flavor than water tuna.
Most of the tuna
One of the most well -known jar tuna brands is Calvo, which is imported by Alfmix.
– The price of the product is also influenced by the store, says Alfmix Marketing Manager Jaana Länsimäki.

The tuna has retained their favorite position, although there are many different types of cans made from domestic fish in grocery stores today.
-About 90 percent of the fish sold in the S Group’s food markets are tuna, says Kovalainen.
According to the K-Group Jäske, consumers began to favor cheaper jar tuna from 2022 onwards.
