For years Christian Streich was present every week as a coach of SC Freiburg. In the meantime it has become quieter around him – he has not changed.

SC Freiburg will play against FC Basel at home in the Europa League on Wednesday evening (from 9 p.m. in the T-Online Live ticker). After a difficult start in the Bundesliga, the team of coach Julian Schuster was able to play two victories through two defeats: in the local duel against VfB Stuttgart (3: 1) and away in Bremen (3: 0). The team hopes for a similarly successful season as the past season – the first for many years without Christian Streich on the sidelines.

The club icon had resigned in June 2024 after more than twelve years and 488 games. Since then it has become quiet about prank that, as head coach of Freiburg, has made a name for himself nationwide through his nature and social commitment.

In an interview with the “Badische Zeitung”, the long -time coach admitted that the changeover to a normal life was not easy for him. After a bicycle trip with a friend from Freiburg to Bilbao, it was difficult for him to then establish a regular daily routine without professional football.

“After that, everyday life came and my usual workflows no longer existed. Sometimes I felt isolated or empty,” said Streich openly and honestly. He stated: “I always knew from Monday to Sunday where I belong. The everyday process was given. Now everything was different.”

However, Streich did not remain inactive. At the Cologne Literature Festival “Lit.Cologne”, he reported from a trip to South America and drove through Argentina and Chile with a pick-up. “We just drove across the country, admired the Andes and were hiking.” He also attended a game from top club River Plate Buenos Aires. “Great. Incredible,” he commented on the experience at “Los Millonarios”, as the club is also called.

He also remained politically present. Already during his active time as a trainer, he repeatedly warned of a right of right in Germany. “Now come the agitators and the try to find a platform to get power,” he said, for example, at the beginning of 2024 in an interview with RTL.
