The Linda de Mol show Briljante Brainen has definitely flopped: there will be no second season. What does that say about the fallen TV queen who invented this format? “She’s not that brilliant.”

It was already expected due to the meager viewing figures: the Linda de Mol flop Briljante Breinen will not be continued. “Unfortunately it will not come back and I think that is a shame, because I really enjoyed doing it,” says the presenter, who attracted only 660 thousand viewers. “That’s certainly not bad these days, but not very good either.”

A little planing

Linda emphasizes that the program attracted many young viewers. “So I think it’s a shame, because it’s very difficult to think of television programs that young people watch,” she says. ANP.

However, it is an expensive program and RTL does not want to wait and see whether any adjustments can work. “Unfortunately, the laws of commercial television are now such that you can no longer say: we’ll watch it for another year or we’ll refine it a bit.”

Take a loss

Linda herself would have liked to continue, despite the poor score. “I would have liked to do it for another year and fine-tune the format a bit and then see what works. But yes, sometimes you just have to take your loss and move on. That’s just how it is.”

Friend and enemy agree why Brilliant Brains failed: the program made no sense. The participants didn’t have to be brilliant at all; they only had to ask trivial questions about Gooische Vrouwen — how can I make this about me? — and Queen Máxima answer. You don’t have to be brilliant for that.

‘Linda not brilliant’

TV authority Tina Nijkamp is anything but surprised. “Now also official. Linda’s trip to RTL 4 is over. Briljante Breinen scored below average. The format was also wrong, with themes such as Máxima and Gooische Vrouwen instead of physics and mathematics,” she writes on her analysis channel.

There they are in the comment section from NU.nl agree. “Linda has made a crucial mistake, namely that if you can remember things well, that does not mean you are brilliant. Being brilliant is really something else. So Linda is not that brilliant…” says a certain Turbo.

‘Off the tube!’

According to Barlaeus, it is mainly due to Linda, who has lost a lot of popular sympathy. “The big problem and downside with this program was the presenter. Linda de Mol really has to leave the TV now. But yes, it is of course a family business. She is indispensable.”

René doesn’t think Linda is innovative enough. “Linda’s golden days are over. Big game shows and quizzes are no longer interesting to most people now that there are so many other things to watch. Simply holding on to what once kept half of the Netherlands in front of the TV is not very smart.”
