We tell you everything about the symptoms and what you can do about melting spots.
What are blemishes?
Blemishes are spots on your skin that are a different color than your normal skin color. These spots are usually in your groin, under your breasts or, for example, on your stomach. In these places, your skin often comes into contact with another piece of skin. Blemishes are especially common in overweight people, because they often suffer from skin folds.
Stains are usually caused by a fungus or yeast, but sometimes the spots are caused by a bacterium. While blemishes can be annoying, they are not dangerous. They are contagious, so you can get them from someone else or pass them on to someone else.
Symptoms of blemishes
If you suffer from blemishes, you probably recognize these symptoms:
- You have spots with small flakes (sheets) in your skin folds
- With a light skin, the spots are often red, with a tinted or dark skin usually darker or lighter in color
- You also suffer from painful tears or wounds in the places
- The spots can itch or give a burning sensation
- The spots can smell bad
What can you do about it?
Because stains can cause annoying complaints, it is nice if you can get rid of them as soon as possible. These tips can help:
- Try to wash your skin only without soap: if you do use soap or shampoo, it is important that you rinse your skin well so that no soap residue remains
- It is important that you pat the skin in the folds dry and do not rub
- If you suffer from itching and a burning sensation, it can help to put some talcum powder in the folds
- Does it stay moist between the skin folds? Then you can put gauze or tear cloth in between. Switch this twice a day, or more often if the gauzes get damp very quickly
- Use a separate towel to dry the blemishes and grab a clean towel every time
- Make sure you wear clean clothes that fit loosely and don’t pinch or chafe against your skin. Preferably wear cotton underwear
- If you suffer from athlete’s foot, it is important that you treat it
- Wear your own flip-flops in areas where many people walk barefoot, such as in shower rooms and swimming pools.
- Wear shoes that allow enough air to pass through, such as sandals. Or, for example, shoes made of linen or leather
- If you are overweight it is important to try to lose weight
