If one person in the current selection of Roda JC knows how to approach the play-offs for promotion to the Eredivisie, it is Daryl Werker.
The defender from Mechelen has already had four play-off campaigns with Roda. The lows and highlights, such as his decisive goal in the final against MVV in 2017, are etched in his memory. On Tuesday he will start his fifth play-off run with Roda, against Excelsior.
Base
Werker played in 30 of Roda’s 38 matches this season, returning after a short-lived football adventure in Greece last season. The question is whether Werker can count on a basic place in the play-offs. Trainer Jurgen Streppel will have to choose between the Limburger and the Finn Richard Jensen in the heart of the defense.
Diptych
After the first leg on Tuesday evening in Rotterdam, Roda will play the return next Saturday evening (8 p.m.) in its own Parkstad Limburg Stadium. On Monday, Roda had already sold more than 8,000 tickets for that confrontation and the expectation is that a few thousand more spectators will join. The winner of the diptych will play in the semifinals of the play-offs against the number sixteen of the Eredivisie.
