Werder’s appeal against Friedl’s ban unsuccessful – new signings in winter?

New arrivals in prospect

Werder Bremen do not want to accept the proposed suspension of two games for captain Marco Friedl. “The DFB has scheduled a two-game ban,” said professional football manager Clemens Fritz in a media round on Tuesday. “We can comment on that,” he added, “and we hope we can boil it down to one game.”

Update October 26 at 1:30 p.m.: Werder Bremen’s appeal was unsuccessful: the sports court of the German Football Association banned Friedl for two games in the Bundesliga. The DFB announced this on Wednesday. The Austrian is also suspended from all of his club’s other championship games until the suspension expires.

From Fritz’s point of view, the offense was not too bad. In the 2-0 Bundesliga draw at SC Freiburg on Saturday, the Austrian received an early red card in the 14th minute after he only managed to get out of the way with an emergency brake against Freiburg attacker Michael Gregoritsch. “It was a tussle between the two players. It wasn’t just one player and it wasn’t a serious foul. That’s why we have hope that we can reduce the ban to one game,” said Fritz. Friedl had not missed a Bundesliga game so far this season, for the 24-year-old central defender it was the first dismissal in the upper house.

Werder Bremen: Fritz announces transfer talks for winter

Werder boss Fritz also let it be known that he was not satisfied with the depth of the squad in the North Germans, who have recently suffered three defeats in a row after a strong start to the season: “The fact is that we don’t have such a monster squad as far as the field players are concerned . We can’t do without five or six regular players without you noticing it.”

Against Freiburg, the promoted team had to do without Niklas Stark, Milos Veljkovic, Christian Groß and Niklas Schmidt for a short time, and Leonardo Bittencourt was also rested by coach Ole Werner due to injury and was not used. For the World Cup break from the end of November, Fritz announced talks at management level with a view to possible improvements in the transfer market in winter: “We still have four games before the break. After the Leipzig game we will sit down and discuss the issue. We follow the market, our scouts are always on the go.”
