Werder gambled away a 2-0 lead and top of the table against Kiel – Terodde let Schalke celebrate late

Sharing of points on St. Pauli

Werder Bremen suffered a heavy setback in the promotion race of the 2nd Bundesliga. Bremen surprisingly lost 2-3 (2-1) against Holstein Kiel on Friday evening and carelessly gave up a 2-0 lead against coach Ole Werner’s former club. For Werner it was only the second defeat with Werder ever.

In front of 42,100 spectators in the sold-out Bremen Weser Stadium, Niclas Füllkrug (2nd minute) and Marvin Ducksch with a converted hand penalty (23rd) gave Werder the lead. But two own goals by Füllkrug (45′) and Anthony Jung (71′) brought Kiel back. Five minutes before the end, Julian Korb even ensured the victory for Kiel and thus caused horror among the Bremen team, who had to give up the lead in the table to FC Schalke 04 again. Kiel finally secured the class with the success.

Terodde’s last-minute goal: Schalke 04 takes a big step towards promotion

Thanks to double goal scorer Simon Terodde, FC Schalke 04 has underpinned its promotion ambitions. In the 2-1 (0-0) win at SV Sandhausen, Terodde gave his team the lead on Friday evening (71st minute) before SVS captain Dennis Diekmeier equalized (83rd). In stoppage time, the attacker was back on the spot. Due to the defeat of SV Werder Bremen, the Gelsenkircheners regained the lead in the table. Sandhausen is not finally saved by the result.

In Sandhausen, the guests struggled for long stretches. Although they had more possession of the ball, they ultimately lacked the power to penetrate for a long time. A triple chance defused the SVS defense in the group (19th) and a little later Patrick Drewes parried a free kick from Schalke’s Rodrigo Zalazar (25th). Only after Darko Churlinov shot the post did Terodde push the ball over the line. On the other side, Diekmeier deflected a cross into the goal to equalize. Terodde scored again in a hectic final phase, before a pack formed in midfield after a foul by Alou Kuol, who was then shown the red card. At the end, the guests, who were celebrated by numerous supporters who had traveled with them, cheered.

However, they did not get any chances to score at first. Finn Ole Becker, who hit the post (57th minute), had the greatest chance. Then Kyereh took the penalty opportunity after a foul on Igor Matanovic and scored his twelfth goal of the season.
