After goalkeeper Mio Backhaus left for SC Freiburg, Werder Bremen signed Karl Hein and promoted him to number 1. The 24-year-old Estonian was previously on loan from English champions FC Arsenal, but the Bundesliga club has now exercised its purchase option.
“Karl already proved last season that he is a goalkeeper at the top level. We are therefore pleased that we will be starting the season with a strong number 1 next season,” said Clemens Fritz, Managing Director of Football, about the national goalkeeper.
Hein moved to Osterdeich from the Gunners on loan last summer and has since made two Bundesliga appearances. In March he injured his hand and was unable to play until the end of the season, but Hein is now fit again.
