Werder Bremen | Veteran Christian Groß can continue to write football fairy tales

Werder Bremen have extended the expiring contract with midfield veteran Christian Groß. The 33-year-old is now under contract at the Weser until the end of June 2024. He announced this at the end of the Bundesliga table on Monday.

“Grosso has made an incredible development in the almost four years that he has been part of the professional squad. Both on the pitch and in the dressing room, he is an important part of our team. We are happy that he continues to see his future at Werder . He is in great shape and I am convinced that we will continue to benefit from his qualities and personality on and off the field in the future,” Werder’s head of scouting and professional football, Clemens Fritz, is quoted as saying on “werder.de”.

Groß had moved from VfL Osnabrück to Bremen in 2019 without any Bundesliga experience, where he was actually only planned to captain the U23s.

Then a true football fairy tale took its course. Groß took advantage of an unexpected opportunity with the pros, made an impression and eventually found his way into the starting XI. In 2022/23, Groß was on the pitch in 16 of 19 league games.

“Everyone knows that I feel incredibly comfortable at Werder”

“Everyone knows that I feel incredibly comfortable at Werder and in this team. I would like to do my part to continue the positive story that we have written over the last year and a half,” said the former German junior international chance to be able to write this success story for at least another year.

Groß only proved his value for Werder Bremen on Sunday when he played the full distance in Werder’s important away win at VfB Stuttgart (2-0).

Before his unexpected breakthrough, the native of Bremen played for Hamburger SV, Babelsberg 03, Sportfreunde Lotte and Osnabrück.
