Werder Bremen is looking for a successor to Horst Steffen, who was released on Sunday morning. A few hours later, the Bundesliga soccer team is said to be already advanced in its search for a coach.

Werder Bremen are apparently putting their foot on the accelerator when looking for a coach. As the “DeichStube” reports, the sporting management of the table is 15th. Although it is still multi-pronged and keeping an eye on several candidates, two favorites are said to have already been identified. It is said that intensive discussions will now be held with both of them. The portal close to the club did not give any specific names.

After the Green-Whites’ 2-0 defeat against TSG Hoffenheim, the Werder bosses are said to have been working on a succession plan behind the scenes. According to the report, Osterdeich is planning to present a successor to Horst Steffen at the beginning of the week.

Managing director football Clemens Fritz revealed the first details about the search for a coach at a press conference on Sunday afternoon. The decision was therefore made to rely on an external solution. The two previous assistant coaches, Raphael Duarte and Christian Groß, who are looking after the team on an interim basis, do not play a role in the medium and long-term considerations.

Fritz also revealed that they had already narrowed down possible options: “It’s not like we’re still looking at ten candidates. We have one or two names on our list that we’re looking into.”

In the meantime, one idea is to hire an interim coach “until the summer” who will provide the necessary stability in the short term. “And then in the summer we’ll see what opportunities arise.”

Magath is probably not a candidate despite the offer, report about ex-Union coach

An experienced coach, three-time champion coach Felix Magath, has already brought himself into the game. In an interview with RTL/ntv and sport.de he said: “I still feel reasonably fit. Not like I did 40 years ago, but I still think I’m still clear in my head. So I’m not averse to it.” And: “I have never made a secret of the fact that I am of the opinion that I can help every club in the Bundesliga.”

However, as the “DeichStube” has learned, the 72-year-old has no chance of making a comeback at Werder Bremen. Magath is not among the favorites of the Werder bosses.

According to “Sportske Novosti”, former Union Berlin coach Nenad Bjelica is one of the candidates. What’s true about the report remains unclear at first: “Sportske Novosti”, with reference to German media, lists Urs Fischer as an option, but the Swiss only joined Mainz 05 in December. Supposedly other candidates are Thomas Reis (Samsunspor) and Enrico Maaßen (FC St. Gallen).
