May 24, 2026 – 1:49 p.mReading time: 1 min.

With a 9-0 vote, the supervisory board confirmed Clemens Fritz as sports director. At the same time, the committee identifies errors in squad planning and transfer policy.
The supervisory board of Werder Bremen After a season analysis, voted 9-0 in favor of further collaboration with Clemens Fritz. The 45-year-old former national player remains sports director at the Bundesliga club – after a season in which Werder finished 15th in the table. narrowly missed relegation with 32 points.
The confirmation is not without reservations. In its statement, the supervisory board writes: “Mistakes were made in the sporting planning and implementation, and there were also some misjudgments in the transfer policy. Unfortunately, the desired effect of the change of coach in the summer to Horst Steffen did not occur.” According to the statement, the committee expects “stable development, consistency and offensive power” for the coming season.
Werder’s season to forget: This is where it’s particularly tricky
There was criticism, above all, of last summer’s squad planning: the signed center forward Victor Boniface fell short of expectations, and seven of the eight new additions were only loaned out.
At the same time, efforts are being made to raise transfer income. According to the club, goalkeeper Mio Backhaus was sold to SC Freiburg for more than ten million euros. It remains to be seen whether transfers from Jens Stage and defender Karim Coulibaly will also bring in further income.
