2024/25 lost in the Weserstadion

In 2024/25, SV Werder Bremen finished in eighth place in the final table – but in the meantime was close to the European Cup places for a long time. This opportunity was wasted, especially in the Weser Stadium at home: while the team of then coach Ole Werner finished third in the away table, only 21 of the 51 points were scored at home. Under the new coach Horst Steffen the signs are reversed. The Green-Whites are mediocre away from home, but at home they achieved their third three-pointer in a row with a late 2-1 win against Wolfsburg. This is the longest streak since 2019, when Florian Kohfeldt was still head coach.

In the current home table, Werder is in sixth place, but looking up: only Bayern Munich (seven wins in a row), VfB Stuttgart (five) and RB Leipzig (four) have better home series. Steffen said about it according to “Bild”: “Before I started here, I saw the home record and thought: It would be nice to win more games at home than away. It is my aim that many people go home happy and that we make people happy. (…) Today the win after going behind was something special. It’s great for me to experience that.”

Of course, the current home strength isn’t just making the coach happy – central defender Amos Pieper said: “Looking at the faces of the fans in the stands enjoying themselves – that’s very special. It was time for us to give something back to the fans with a good game. We’re happy that we got the three points.”

Steffen, he said, had an emotional outburst even after the winning goal by offensive talent Samuel Mbangula (21) in stoppage time. With regard to the ongoing topic of the European Cup, which had always been downplayed in the previous season, the coach, who comes from Meerbusch in North Rhine-Westphalia, kept it with Nordic understatement: “Everyone can dream, but we stay grounded.”
