Instead, switch to Union

Derrick Köhn would have liked to stay at Werder Bremen as a loan player in the summer of 2025. The 27-year-old left winger did not go back to Turkey to his home club Galatasaray, but instead moved to Union Berlin for 4 million euros, where he received a contract until 2029. The Green-Whites, for whom the Hamburg native had appeared 30 times, decided not to take out a purchase option worth 5.1 million euros and then apparently offered too little for a permanent commitment.

“I could have imagined staying 100 percent. I felt very, very comfortable in Bremen and wanted to stay. I’m always happy when I hear from my ex-colleagues there. The fact that Gala and Werder didn’t come to an agreement in the end really hurt me,” said Köhn in the “Stammplatz” podcast of “Bild”.

Werder tried to buy the Ghanaian international, but hit a brick wall with Galatasaray before Union won the contract. “I had very good discussions with those responsible at Werder and repeatedly asked Clemens Fritz (SVW sports director; editor) how things were looking. But things didn’t work out between the clubs.”

Köhn has made 25 appearances for Köpenick so far and has been involved in two goals – including the celebrated opening goal in the 4-1 defeat against his former club from Bremen on March 8th. “I didn’t want to provoke Werder, but as I said, that hurt me. So I just wanted to let the derrick out. Werder is still in my heart. The fact that it didn’t work took a toll on me,” said the professional, whose market value is estimated at 4 million euros.
