Werder Bremen cancels training camp before departure

It can go that fast: Werder Bremen wanted to fly to the training camp in Spain on Sunday. But nothing came of it in the short term – four professionals and one team member tested positive.

Due to five new corona cases, second division Werder Bremen canceled their training camp in Spain at short notice. Immediately before the planned departure, striker Niclas Füllkrug tested positive as well as Manuel Mbom, Milos Veljkovic and Marco Friedl as well as rehab trainer Marcel Abanoz – Werder canceled the trip to Murcia. Preparations for the rest of the season are now taking place in Bremen.

Werder’s managing director Frank Baumann described the decision as “without alternative. There is a risk that there will be more positive cases in the next few days,” Baumann is quoted in the club announcement: “Also with a view to the joint flight with FC St. Pauli we had to act responsibly. ” The results of the rapid tests of the last few days “did not indicate this result”.

Players have no symptoms

All four professionals who tested positive on Sunday showed no symptoms and went straight to quarantine at home. In addition to Mitchell Weiser, five players at Werder now have corona.

Werder’s league competitors Fortuna Düsseldorf and Schalke 04 had previously canceled their planned training camp. There have also been several corona cases recently in the Bundesliga. Among others at Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Bayern Munich (Read more about this here).
