Werder Bremen cancels ex-playmaker

For six years Zlatko Junuzovic laced the football shoes for Werder Bremen, now the Austrian is apparently thinking of a comeback with the green-whites. It probably won’t come to that anyway.

198 games, 22 goals and 53 assists: Zlatko Junuzovic recorded impressive statistics between 2012 and 2018 as a central midfielder at the then Bundesliga club Werder Bremen.

Although it wasn’t enough for the Austrian on the Weser for a title, the 34-year-old has nevertheless become a fan favourite. The supporters were all the sadder when Junuzovic left Werder almost four years ago for Red Bull Salzburg. But now the former Austrian national player is apparently thinking of a comeback in Bremen.

Asked by “Bild” if he would like to play again for Werder Bremen next season, Junuzovic said: “Everything is possible, even if there is nothing concrete at the moment.” Together with his family, he will discuss “what is best for us and our two children,” added the midfielder, adding meaningfully: “I’m not going to rule anything out. I’ll take my time and we’ll see what happens in the end. “

Werder Bremen cancels Junuzovic

When asked about the words of the midfielder, Bremen’s football boss Clemens Fritz, who once played with Zlatko Junuzovic in the Bundesliga, replied that Werder is currently not thinking of a comeback. “He did very well in Austria. But he comes from a long injury and the intensity in Germany is very high. We like Zladdi and we know how important he was for us. But a commitment is not an issue,” quoted “image“.

After being relegated to the second division at the end of last season, a big change had taken place in Bremen. Many young players have been integrated. Werder is currently on the way up and has the same number of points as FC St. Pauli at the top of the 2nd Bundesliga.

However, Junuzovic admitted that he never lost sight of his former club and always kept in touch. “I watch every game. I talk a lot about Werder with Theo Selassie, who recently left. I’m also in contact with many players from the current team,” revealed the Austrian. “I recently congratulated Jiri Pavlenka on the birth of his second child.”
