The transition to the new year did not go without a hitch in the Netherlands. A major fire broke out in the Vondelkerk in Amsterdam, which is located near the Vondelpark. The church can no longer be saved, the Amsterdam-Amstelland Safety Region said after a night of extinguishing the fire. Dozens of people had to leave their homes as a precaution. Furthermore, two deaths occurred elsewhere in the country after accidents involving fireworks.
