It is the pride of Weesp. The town hall, where the first council meeting took place in 1776, has been in the official top 100 of national monuments since 1954. Weesper and historian Christian Pfeiffer: “It was an ultra-modern neoclassical building at the time. The construction cost a lot of money and it really shows: we are rich. It was really meant to impress.”

Wealth through gin

For a short period in the 18th century, Weesp owed its economic prosperity mainly to the gin industry. So there was money to decorate the entire town hall down to the last detail. This also applies to the mayors’ chamber at the time. And that room is still the workplace of the current board. Katinka Hilders-van de Wetering, chairman of the current board of Weesp: “It is special to be able to work in this historic room.”
