“Wednesday” sets a new Netflix record

Tim Burton’s series “Wednesday” is currently on everyone’s lips. As an “Addams Family” spin-off, expectations for the production were high from the start. Netflix itself would not have thought that the series would ignite like this right from the start.

“Dahmer” has just set a new record on Netflix. The macabre story of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was streamed a whopping 196.2 million hours in its first week of launch. That was absolute top value for Netflix – until now.

“Wednesday” breaks fable record on Netflix

“Stranger Things”, “The Crown”, “Bridgerton”, “Squid Game”, the already mentioned series “Dahmer: Monster” – these are the big names on the Netflix top list. All of these titles have more than paid for themselves on the streaming service. And “Wednesday” is now joining this illustrious squad right at the start of the series.

The production by mastermind Tim Burton has been running on Netflix since November 23, 2022. And in the very first week, “Wednesday” smashed the record set by “Dahmer: Monster”. After its launch, the “Addams Family” spin-off was streamed a total of 341.23 million hours! That’s almost twice as much as the previous leader. With its launch week alone, “Wednesday” is almost among the top 10 most successful series of all time on Netflix.

If the first season continues to attract so many viewers, then it could catch up with all-time favorites like “Ozark”, “13 Reasons Why” or “Inventing Anna” as soon as next week. And maybe the series will finally succeed in dethroning “Squid Game,” which has saluted from the top for more than a year with a total of 1.65 billion streamed hours in the first month.

That’s what “Wednesday” is about

The Tim Burton series revolves around the titular protagonist Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega), a member of the notorious Addams family. After the oddball misfit with extraordinary abilities is expelled from school, her parents (played by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán) send her to Nevermore Academy against her will. There she offends again – and witnesses several mysterious murders.

In her search for answers, she is also confronted with her own quite remarkable family history. There is also a dark secret slumbering in Nervermore’s history. The first season released so far has eight episodes and a running time of 8.5 hours. With the current viewing figures, this also means that more than 50 million households have watched the series. So far nothing is known about a sequel. With such numbers, Netflix should be very interested in producing a second season of “Wednesday”.
