Weather capers at the Kiel Week

On the third day of the Kiel Week, the weather put a spanner in the works for those responsible for the sailing event. Due to strong thunderstorms, races in numerous boat classes had to be cancelled.

Only the big keelboats were able to go on the water and sailed the first two races of the three-day “Kiel Cup” series. The day’s victory in the ORC I/II class went to the crew around Jens Kuphal from Berlin.

“The chance of regular races during the day was too small, the risk of suddenly having to salvage a lot of small dinghies in no time at all was simply too high,” said Dirk Ramhorst, head of sports at Kieler Woche, explaining the numerous cancellations.

Around 4,000 active sailors have registered for the largest sailing event in the world. Two anniversaries are also being celebrated: Exactly 140 years ago the first Kiel Week took place, exactly 50 years ago Olympic medals were sailed in the Schleswig-Holstein state capital.
