Water reservoir in Woumen less filled than usual, Watergroep asks to be economical

The reservoir of De Blankaart near Woumen was built about fifty years ago. To this day it is still one of the largest reservoirs in our country. One third of all drinking water for West Flanders is produced in the reservoir. “It contains about three billion liters of water, equivalent to 40 football fields,” says Kathleen De Schepper of De Watergroep.

Little water

But that’s the theory, because before a spring there is already little water in the reservoir. You can see from the discolorations that the water level has certainly dropped by one meter. “Normally we are at a height of 5 meters around this period. Now the water comes to 3.7 meters.” That is low for the month of May.

De Watergroep is now first using the water from the Gavers near Harelbeke, because it suspects that rationing will take place again in the future.
