Homeowners in Drenthe must take into account a higher account of the water board tax. Due to increasing costs, the water boards need more money and for the most part that ends up on the plate of households.

Protection against high water, purifying sewage water and renovating treatment plants. The water boards have spent a lot of money on it and calculate it in the taxes. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), the amount of the levy differs greatly per region.

In addition to the own rate of the water board, the value of a home plays a role. Among other things, the location determines the WOZ value and influences the amount of the load. It also depends on the number of people who live in a house, a household of more people has lost more taxes than a single -person household.

Four water boards are active in Drenthe: Noorderzijlvest, Hunze and Aa’s, Drents Overijsselse Delta (Wdodelta) and Vechtstroom. If the average national WOZ value is taken, Noorderzijlvest almost comes to the highest levy in the country. A multi -person household with an owner -occupied home in that water board has to pay 676 euros per year. Only at Wetterskip Fryslân is the levy slightly higher (679 euros per year).

“We have to work harder and spend more money to guarantee our duties,” explains the Noorderzijlvest Water Board. “For example, we take many measures for cleaner surface water for the coming generations. And we have to purify our waste water better and adjust our installations accordingly.”

Noorderzijlvest expects taxes to continue to rise in the coming years. “The future challenges ensure a longer period with higher investments and therefore also higher tax rates. And that will continue for a while.”

In the Hunze and AAs Water Board, the rise in water board tax has been the smallest in the past five years. There, a multi-person household with an average WOZ value in 2025 pays 13 percent more than in 2020. It concerns 474 and 515 euros in tax respectively. The same household pays the lowest amount in the De Dommel Water Board in Noord-Brabant, namely 370 euros.

The Netherlands is divided into 21 water boards. Compared to five years ago, the water board tax has increased by 41 percent.
