24 YEARS OF LONGING IS OVER
The National Football Team faced Spain, Georgia and Bulgaria in Group E of the World Cup European qualifiers. The red-whites finished the group in second place with 13 points as a result of 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss and qualified for the play-offs. The national team beat Romania 1-0 in Istanbul in the play-off semi-finals, and ended the 24-year longing by defeating Kosovo away with the same score in the final.

The Crescent and Stars team last took part in the World Cup jointly organized by South Korea and Japan. While the national team had a very successful tournament, they also achieved the best result in their history. National Team defeated South Korea and finished the World Cup in 3rd place.

A National Team had the right to participate in the World Cup three times, in 1950, 1954 and 2002, but competed in the tournament twice. The Crescent and Stars could not participate in the tournament held in Switzerland in 1950 due to financial problems.
WORLD CUP TICKETS WERE PURCHASED FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH FRANCO’S DRAW
While the national team was fighting against Spain in the qualifiers for the World Cup in Switzerland in 1954, the third match was played on a neutral field when both countries got one victory each. While this match ended 2-2, since there were no extra time or penalties in the season’s status, a draw was held and after Franco, an Italian boy who worked as a ball boy, threw the money into the air, Turkey bought its first World Cup ticket for the first time.
The national team collected 2 points as a result of 1 win and 1 loss in the group with Hungary, West Germany and South Korea. The red-whites, who faced West Germany again as per the group format, lost to their opponent and said goodbye to the tournament.

While Turkey has never faced Australia in official matches, they played special matches twice. The national team emerged victorious from the said competitions. Finally, on May 24, 2004, the Crescent and Stars won the match in Australia with a score of 1-0.
