April 21, 2025: Cambridge United – Leyton Orient 1: 2

On Easter Monday, Cambridge United met Leyton Orient (1: 2) in Abbey Stadium at home – a duel with a lot of explosiveness in the third -class League One. For 21 pounds (24.5 euros), I secured a ticket online a few days before the game for the Newmarket Road End Terrace, sold out on the match day – a pure standing place behind the goal.

Even before the game, I had contacted fans and the club managers through a Facebook group. Particularly surprising: The fan representative asked me whether I wanted to appear on the electronic scoreboard with a personal welcome for first -time visitors to the stadium and birthday children – an offer that I could of course not reject. My photo in an English professional stadium? Crazy and somehow pretty cool.

Cambridge has been fighting against relegation (for the table) since the beginning of the season. There were two victories from three games recently, but before the third last matchday there were five points behind a safe place in the table. The hope lived – and the atmosphere in the stadium reflected. Despite relegation worries, sang and drummed continuously. Quite different from three days earlier when I visited Norwich City in the Championship, where the mood in the third defeat in a row (to the game plan) was noticeably subdued.

The Mighty U took the lead in the 19th minute through a counter goal by Josh Stokes. Leyton Orient from the east of London, which plays around the playoff places, was game-determining, but rarely came to clear opportunities. In the second half, the guests pushed more-two goals in the 67th minute through the leader of the scorer list, Charlie Kelman, and 78th by Jamie Donley, finally turned the game to the 1-2 final score. Substitute Elias Kachunga, once active for SC Paderborn and Ingolstadt in the Bundesliga, could not change the defeat.

The descent for Cambridge is getting closer. The direct competitors also failed, but the deficit remains almost unobtrusive. After the final whistle I was still waiting for a real highlight: the fan representative led me through the stadium and I was even allowed to meet the players. When Kachunga heard that I came from Hamburg, the native of Cologne greeted me with a warm “Moin Moin” – a little moment that will surely be remembered.

What Cambridge United showed that day was not only a fighting spirit on the pitch, but also a remarkable closeness to the fans. I was thrilled by this almost family atmosphere – and convinced: Cambridge United has won a new fan. Thanks to the entire team – that was a football experience as it should be!
