Last Friday, the city of Waregem received the Literate Municipality label. Alderman for Social Affairs Cindy Vanhoutte officially received this from Tine Baert, director of Ligo Central and South West Flanders. Ligo is a center for basic education that focuses on supporting people with low literacy in Flanders. Research shows that almost 1 in 6 adults in Flanders has low literacy.

The label is a recognition for local authorities that actively work on literacy, clear communication, digital inclusion and accessible services for all residents. The provincial government also supports this initiative. In the meantime, 29 of the 62 West Flemish cities and municipalities have already achieved the label. Waregem is certainly proud to make a difference as a local government through, among other things, clear language, training, targeted referral and collaboration with Ligo.
