Third division soccer team Waldhof Mannheim threw the favored second division team Holstein Kiel out of the competition in a cup thriller.
In front of 12,000 spectators in the Carl Benz Stadium, the hosts won 5:3 on penalties and reached the second round for the second time in a row. It was 0-0 after 120 minutes.
Mannheim’s Fridolin Wagner converted the last penalty. Marvin Schulz from Kiel had previously put his shot over the goal. Kiel, still a semi-finalist in the 2020/21 season, failed in round one for the first time since 2015.
In a lively first half with chances on both sides, Mannheim gave the “Storchen”, who were still unbeaten in the league, a duel at eye level right from the start.
Only after the break did the encounter level off and lived more and more on the tension.
