During the ‘burglaries’ Willem Bakker, as Night Watch van Westwoud, keeps an eye on things while he delivers the newspapers. He always does that dressed in black. “They don’t have to see me and I don’t have to see the burglars,” he said a few years ago.

After walking the dog he starts with his round. Willem misses nothing. He knows which car belongs to which resident and sees immediately if something is wrong. His presence threw his fruit during an earlier burglary wave. “Until Hoogkarspel there was burglary, Westwoud they left and in Oosterblokker they continued.”

Stolen bike

Last weekend it was hit in Westwoud. Willem saw light burning in a car around half past four. “He was messing around in that car. Later I followed him, at a distance. He rattled with older residents at the back door and finally I saw him riding a stolen bike.”

In the meantime, Willem had contact with the police twice and when they arrived, the suspected burglar could be held through a backyard after a flight attempt. Willem then told the agents what he had seen.
