VTWonenPresenter Kees Tol had already warned his followers on Instagram about the episode earlier this week: not all candidates are always equally enthusiastic after the transformation. It turned out he hadn’t said a word too many.

René and Denise want something new

The formula of VTWonen: fall in love with your house again has been waterproof for seasons. Kees Tol connects couples with housing needs to an experienced stylist who uses mood boards, conversations and a handful of sponsors to put together a dream new interior.

During the unveiling, enthusiastic participants often experience one surprise after another. Things turned out a bit differently in Hoofddorp, where stylist Fietje Bruijn was allowed to work for René and Denise. They wanted their living room and outdated kitchen to be taken care of. Fietje got to work and after two commercial breaks the couple was face to face with their new interior again.

‘I think it’s terrible’

Fietje had provided the living room with wall coverings and opted for soft earth tones with lots of pink. It was supposed to create a warm, cozy and welcoming atmosphere, but René saw it differently: “It can be removed again soon. How bad, what they have made of it. There was a beautiful staircase in my room and now it has become a block of wood. I think it’s terrible.”

René and Denise continued their tour of the house in horror, experiencing one unpleasant surprise after another. The new carpet was terribly impractical, the tiles on the wall were not to their taste, the bench carefully selected by the stylist was ‘terribly clumsy’ and the warm, cozy atmosphere that Fietje was going for felt very oppressive.

Kees Tol made a valiant attempt to discover some positive points and there were: the frame in the connecting door was beautiful and the kitchen could accommodate the new tap and the double oven. But otherwise, René said he was mainly in a negative mood vibe.

‘Changing is not improving’

During the follow-up, Kees Tol was forced to apply some psychology from the cold ground: “Is it just that you can’t handle change?” he wondered. René had a ready answer: “I think I can handle improvements very well. And not every change is an improvement. I think a lot of things have changed here, but so far I don’t think it’s an improvement.”

While the credits were rolling, stylist Fietje was allowed to respond to the disappointed residents. She called their reaction ‘a shame anyway’ and pointed out to the couple that she cannot honor all their wishes: “You make it a match and I have tried to do that as best as I can. But I am a bit surprised by the fierceness… I think that’s a shame.”

535,000 viewers saw how the eventful broadcast ended on a negative note.
