“De NAVO moet haar aanwezigheid in het Noordpoolgebied vergroten”, zei NAVO-secretaris-generaal Jens Stoltenberg tegen de Duitse krant ‘Welt am Sonntag’. Volgens de Noor heropent Moskou niet alleen bases uit het Sovjettijdperk in zijn Arctic areas, maar plaatst het daar also new wapensystems such as hypersonic missiles. Ook China toont steeds sea interest in de region, aldus Stoltenberg.
Vrijdag maakt het Amerikaanse ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken bekend that het voor het een speciale gezant voor het Noordpoolgebied gaat aanstellen.
