Vooruit wants to be able to have parents admitted during pregnancy if they endanger their child: “A baby with withdrawal symptoms? Horrible” | Interior

Vooruit is launching some remarkable proposals in the healthcare debate, including the ‘supervision order’. The party wants to be able to intervene during pregnancy if one of the parents shows disturbing behavior that could endanger the child, for example the compulsory admission of pregnant women with an addiction who refuse help.

“Have you ever seen a baby with withdrawal symptoms”, says Rousseau in the newspaper ‘De Standaard’. “It’s terrible. Children of addicted mothers are often born with brain injuries. Now we don’t even have enough shelters for them. There is nothing socialist about looking away from that.”

Rousseau therefore wants a legal regulation to intervene early in extreme cases. “First we overwhelm such a vulnerable family with a tsunami of aid. Several services work together in this and that multidisciplinary team will advise the court in its decision.”
