People who are having financial difficulties can shop cheaper at Pit en Boon. The products come from, among others, Food Bank West Flanders and Food Act 13, organizations that are committed to combating poverty. Carine, Geert’s wife, also helps there as a volunteer. Carine Desmet: “We have all the necessary food here, we have dairy products, charcuterie, daily specials. We also have vegetables and fruit, we have a rack with Colruyt products.”
“Prize is actually dedicated to volunteers themselves”
Dozens of volunteers work at Pit en Boon, but Wevelgem has thousands in total. The mayor is proud. Jan Seynhaeve, mayor of Wevelgem: “Volunteering is always a win-win. You do something for someone else. You help other people, but in a sense you also help yourself. By volunteering for someone else, you actually do something that makes you feel good. We are proud of the people who commit themselves every day. The prize is actually dedicated to them.”
