Volleyball playoffs: Dresdner SC’s dream of defending the title burst

Potsdam fends off nine set balls

The excitement of the first movement was hard to beat. At first the DSC had a small advantage, but was never able to gain more than two points. At 14:13 the hostesses took the lead for the first time. But even they failed to carve out a cushion. So Dresden finally had the first set ball, but Potsdam was able to fend it off.

And not only that: first the SCP himself had a chance to win the set, then they fended off eight more set balls in a row. Only the tenth Dresden attempt brought the 1-0 set lead. Maya Storck scored 14 points in this set alone.

Two clear sentences for Potsdam

The second round wasn’t quite as exciting. Although the Saxons were initially able to make up for an early three-point deficit, the DSC then missed too many opportunities, while Potsdam acted with great pressure in the attacks. The reigning German champion finally had to give up the sentence at 18:25.

It became even clearer in sentence number three. Dresden was only at eye level at the beginning, but then it was completely off the mark. Potsdam meanwhile scored nine points in a row, blocked one attack after the other and clearly won the set (25:10).

Dresden makes it exciting again

In the fourth round, too, it briefly looked as if it would be a clear affair for Potsdam. However, Dresden fought back, was able to catch up four points (4:8) and was close to the set ball, but made a mistake at the net. Instead, Potsdam got match point. Dresden fended off the first attempt, but on the second try the serve went straight to the line and ended the game and Dresden’s hopes of successfully defending the title.

Final against Stuttgart

Potsdam is thus in the final series for the German championship for the first time. There it goes against the big favorites MTV Stuttgart. The Swabians lost only one game in the main round and defeated Schweriner SC 3-1 and 3-1 in the other semi-final series.
