The Easter days may take a while, but in Assen the Easter Volleyball Tournament (PVT) is already in full swing. For the 56th time, student and student teams compete for the coveted title.

What once started as a modest tournament for Christian schools has since grown into a grand sporting event. This year 58 teams are participating, coached by more than 100 trainers and encouraged by an expected 2500 visitors. “It’s a tournament that you really have to experience,” says chairman Arjan Elsinga. “The atmosphere is fantastic, you see a lot of the same faces every year and everyone is happy to meet again.”

In addition to the sporting battle, there is another essential element: the host families. No fewer than 135 Asser families open their houses for the volleyball players. “Without them, the tournament could not survive,” emphasizes Elsinga. Willem and Marjo Jagersma, who accommodate four players, enjoy the cosiness in the house. “They tidy up the dishwasher and go to bed on time. At least we just started … a lot can happen!” Willem laughs.
