Rudi Völler remains sports director of the German national team. As the DFB announced, the 64-year-old extended in Great Britain and Ireland until the European Championship in 2028. Völler had taken over his post shortly after the early failure at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by Oliver Bierhoff. After the end of Hansi Flick as national coach in September 2023, he helped out an international match as an interim coach against France (2-1) and then brought Julian Nagelsmann as the new head coach.
Völler, which was actually only extended until the EM European Championship European Championships 2024, as sports director last spring until the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada. Shortly afterwards, Nagelsmann had also extended his contract until the tournament in the summer of next year. “Actually, I had planned to stop in 2026. But I’m honest: Julian, the team and the entire team have grown dear to me,” Völler told the “Express” before the National League duels and already indicated further cooperation.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf now said: “Rudi Völler was and is a very important building block that the national team found back to the success. After three disappointing tournaments. He is of central importance for the national coach and his team as well as the entire DFB. Therefore, after the extension with Julian Rudi, it was also convincing. For me, it was clear to the national team. I am pleased that this combination will continue. “
Völler explained: “The national team and their entire team at the DFB have grown for me. Of course, the exciting home championship, but above all, the cooperation with Julian Nagelsmann has a decisive part. I am very much looking forward to going back to the next EM with Julian and his team-the way back to the sporting success and to the hearts of the fans in Germany. Not where we want to go.
