The works council chief of VW Saxony, Uwe Kunstmann, resigns from his offices in the Zwickau vehicle.
The overall works council chairman turned to the employees on Friday in a letter to the employees, in which he justified his retreat with personal misconduct, as the company of the German Press Agency confirmed. Kunstmann informed the company about its planned step in advance, said company spokesman Christian Sommer. First, the “Free Press Chemnitz” reported on the personnel.
The background is therefore a traffic accident in July, which the 50-year-old caused at his own statement. Kunstmann thus draws consequences from “serious personal mistakes”, which he had committed as a private individual. He made the decision to avert damage from the workforce and the company. Volkswagen Sachsen did not comment on the decision of his overall works council chairman. “We accept his decision and thank you for working in his function,” said Christian Sommer. Kunstmann will continue to work in his offices until the end of September to ensure an orderly transformation process, Sommer continues.
Double retreat at the top
The personnel come for VW Saxony at the end of a “difficult week”. Kunstmann’s deputy Kristin or her resignation had already announced the day before. According to the company, the works council vice-chief wants to reorient itself professionally. IG Metall must now determine the successor until October in order to represent the interests of the local employees but also in the top of the group in Wolfsburg. The next works council election at VW Saxony will be coming up in January.
Pioneering location under pressure
As well as other VW locations, the work in Zwickau is increasingly under pressure due to the austerity course prescribed across the group. Zwickau is VW pioneer in the production of electric cars. As the first location, the car factory has only produced fully electric vehicles since November 2019. Almost every second approved electric car from the Volkswagen Group comes from Zwickau. But the demand for the vehicles is still weakening. Therefore, many temporary contracts had not already been extended and the night shift with the two production lines were canceled.
VW puts great hopes in new, cheap electric models: On Sunday, the “IAA Mobility” automotive fair opens the doors for specialist audience. Among other things, VW has the world premieres of several small electric cars from the Volkswagen brands, Cupra and Skoda announced.
