Despite criticism of her role in the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen, Lower Saxony’s Minister of Culture Julia Willie Hamburg also wants to keep the mandate after the state elections in 2027 – provided that it is again part of the state government.

When asked whether she wanted to continue, the Greens’ politician replied with a clear “yes”. Critics had criticized that their department had no direct connection to the car industry. However, in particular in times of crisis, it is important that both government parties take on responsibility, Hamburg told the German Press Agency.

“There should be no doubt that the commitment to Volkswagen is worn by the entire cabinet.” The interaction of the SPD and the Greens on the Supervisory Board has proven itself. “In addition, I bring a supplementary perspective to the supervisory board, which also represents added value,” said Hamburg.

The Greens politician sees her double role as a minister and supervisory board. Both can be reconciled in time and in the matter. The activity in the Supervisory Board is “great added value” for her because it gets an additional view of the economic situation of the country.

With Olaf Lies and “Right Wing”

Hamburg said to work with Prime Minister Olaf Lies (SPD), who has also been on the Supervisory Board since May: “I am convinced that it will run with Olaf Lies and we will go into work together with the right momentum.” Before that, she had already worked very well and collegially with the former Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) in the 20-member body.

With a view to the future of the VW plant in Osnabrück and a possible cooperation between the car maker with the armaments group Rheinmetall, Hamburg emphasized that the focus was initially on securing jobs. They only comment on specific scenarios when there is a realistic option.

Osnabrück is “in the game” near Rheinmetall

Rheinmetall boss Armin Papperger had recently opened openly for an expansion of the collaboration. “We are always open to cooperation,” he said, referring to existing projects with Volkswagen’s truck daughter Traton (Man, Scania). Osnabrück is “of course also in the game” should add additional needs.

The state of Lower Saxony holds 20 percent of the voting rights in the VW group. Prime Minister Lies and his deputy Hamburg sit for the country on the supervisory board. Together with the employee representatives, they have the majority there, and the country has a veto law with important decisions.
