VKW enters the cup match against Jubbega and falls 3-1

VKW was kicked out of the cup tournament 3-1 by Jubbega. At halftime it was already 1-0 for the Frisians.

VKW had been warned in advance that it would certainly not be an easy task in Jubbega. Last season, both teams played together in the competition in the first division F of Sunday football. VKW was promoted thanks to a period title.

Jubbega achieved the second period, but ultimately missed promotion to the Fourth Division by a hair’s breadth. Moreover, VKW was not very successful against the stiff Jubbega in the previous season. In Jubbega it achieved a 1-1 draw, but in Westerbork the Frisians took off with the 1-0 win.

Focus mainly on Hollandia

Trainer Bernd van Bolhuis of VKW was well aware before the cup confrontation that his team would not be able to qualify for the quarter finals in the battle for the northern district cup without a fight. ,,Of course we would like to win, but we are mainly focusing on next Sunday for the important competition match against Hollandia”, said Van Bolhuis.

VKW got off to an excellent start, but was unlucky that the referee disallowed a goal for unclear reasons. Halfway through the first half, Thymo de Vries opened the score for Jubbega: 1-0.

Halfway through the second half, the battle seemed decided after a weak intervention by goalkeeper Martijn Mulder: 2-0. However, VKW showed resilience. Durk de Jong did see a penalty kick saved, but moments later it became exciting again due to Anjo Willems’ connection goal: 2-1.

‘Referee not with us’

VKW did go on the hunt for the equalizer. In the final minute, VKW’s hopes were dashed by Jubbega’s third goal: 3-1. ,,Everything happened in the final phase”, said Van Bolhuis. “We didn’t have the referee with us. We deserved a second penalty kick, but the referee put the ball outside the penalty area.”
