VKW can’t score again

For goals you are at the wrong place at VKW. The Westerborkers scored only four times in the first eight league games, the least of all teams in the Fourth Division. In yesterday’s home game against RKVV Velsen, they again failed to hit the bull’s eye.

The North Hollanders did that once in the final phase of the unexciting duel. ,,Based on our game and the number of chances, we would have deserved at least a draw”, said coach Bernd van Bolhuis. ,,But we miss the opportunities that we get. We just don’t score.”

It hit the nail on the head. The best chance that killed VKW was just before the break for Anjo Willems, but the number 10 of the home team blasted hard and wildly over Dennis Flecken’s goal from close by. ,,That ball should have gone in”, said Van Bolhuis.

In his prime, an opportunity of this caliber would have been a guaranteed piece of cake for VKW’s all-time top scorer, but Willems has reached the late fall of his career. He will turn 33 in December. Logically, he is no longer the sharp striker of the past and made that clear in a number of other situations as well.

Immediately after the resumption, Twan Jalving also had to pull the trigger. The son of ACV’s trainer Ruud Jalving managed to free himself, but then missed the overview to slide the ball past Flecken. He shot it straight ahead against Velsen’s goalkeeper.

being business

A bow ball just wide of Leon Santema halfway through the first half deserved a better fate. And Durk de Jong was unlucky with a striking header that was turned on the goal line by a Velsen player who was unaware of this.

,,We have to be much more businesslike for the goal”, said Van Bolhuis. ,,Velsen is a team against which we can and should take points. Now we’re here again empty-handed and staring at the bottom. Incredibly sour.”

Perhaps Jonas Nijland and Werner Wijnholds can give the goal malaise at their club a more positive view. Wijnholds made his comeback against Velsen as a substitute after he had been sidelined for quite some time due to a broken arm.

Nijland, VKW’s best player, has been missing for a month due to an ankle injury sustained in the home game against Alcides. The attacker will resume training this week. Van Bolhuis: ,,I don’t expect to be able to call on Jonas in the first two or three weeks. But with the return of Wijnholds and soon also Nijland, we will feel a bit better about our players. Robert Veen is now also there again.” The central defender returned from a three-week holiday in Bali at the end of last week.”

Velsen cherished the barely deserved victory. Much further than a header into Marc Kloosterboer’s side net and a shot by Abdelmajid Boauli just wide, the team had not yet come when Mischa Plug hit the ball in the 86 ste minute from a high cross past Martijn Mulder. The goalkeeper of VKW was far too easily outdone in the air.
