It is busy on top of the ‘Spiral Hill’ in Emmen. From the hill, visitors look towards the sand excavation and artwork ‘Broken Circle’ in Emmerhout, near Emmen. The landscape artwork could be visited free of charge this weekend due to the national Heritage Day.
And there is interest for that, sees Anne Renders from the Land Art Contemporary Foundation. “We thought it was great to give residents of Emmen and the surrounding area free of free access to this special work, because it is also their cultural heritage in the end.
Visitors were taken from the station with a special bus to the sand excavation. “The geese surrounding it, the fact that it is a sand excavation and also that boulder that came through the ice age here. That everything comes together so that it is a unique thing,” says one of the visitors who enjoys the view.
Spiral Hill/Broken Circle has been around for over 50 years. In 1971 it was made by the American artist Robert Smithson and this is his only work outside of Europe. “And in Emmen, that is a bit special. Furthermore, it is a very nice area, you have to maintain that,” says another visitor.
