Visit from British superstar Nigella Lawson gives Amsterdam candy shop a Christmas boost

Top chef and British TV star Nigella Lawson treats a charming Amsterdam sweet shop to unforgettable holidays after a special visit in a Christmas special on British TV, and a promotion on her Instagram page with almost 3 million followers.

The shop shone in a special Christmas broadcast on BBC one, in which Nigella celebrated Christmas in the Dutch capital. The broadcast attracted about 1.6 million viewers in England.

Thanks to the broadcast and Nigella’s Instagram post, English tourists know how to find the shop en masse, Mariska tells NH Radio. “Where are you from?”, echoes through the shop in an Amsterdam accent. “London!”, the customers shout.

Nigella’s favourite

Mariska has been in the shop in the Jordaan for 21 years and has seen all types of customers come by. The Amsterdam native is very pleased with Nigella. The world-famous British chef stopped by the store to shop before the recordings, but skipped the English liquorice. “She really likes the salty sal ammoniac liquorice,” says Mariska. “That’s definitely her favorite.”

But for the broadcast they chose some licorice flavors that were intended for a broader audience. “For the broadcast she bought sweet sal ammoniac liquorice in the shape of canal houses and a caramel liquorice.”

Mariska still enjoys all the attention every moment and invites everyone to take a look. “Come and visit us in the new year,” says Mariska. “When everyone is off the diet again.”
