Violent images: Azpilicueta gets oxygen after a kick in the face, Chelsea captain recovers quickly | Foreign football

With videoChelsea and Southampton fans and players have had some worrying moments at London’s Stamford Bridge this afternoon when home side captain César Azpilicueta required treatment for minutes after receiving a kick to the head from Southampton’s Sekou Mara. The defender was out for a long time and was then only carried off the field after ten minutes on a stretcher.

Azpilicueta was hit in the face in the 80th minute by Mara, who wanted to knock over the ball (see video below). The game was immediately stopped, after which medics rushed onto the field with a stretcher. The Chelsea players had to be patient for more than nine minutes.

During that period, Azpilicueta was given oxygen. Rumors that he had swallowed his tongue have not yet been confirmed. After the 34-year-old Spaniard had somewhat stabilized and regained consciousness, he was taken away on a stretcher. Chelsea coach Graham Potter confirmed shortly after the game that he is conscious. “He is in the hospital, the best place for him right now. He is conscious and has already spoken to his wife.” At first glance, the damage would not be too bad.

In the final phase, Chelsea could no longer prevent an embarrassment. Hekkensluiter Southampton managed to stay upright, but won (0-1). With that, the worries for manager Graham Potter just keep piling up. Chelsea can’t seem to capitalize on Todd Boehly’s massive investment. The American owner spent 500 million euros on new players this season.

Also in 2023, the superpower from London will only have one victory. Since the end of October, Chelsea have played 15 games in all competitions, winning just three times, drawing four times and suffering nine defeats. Today’s is the most painful in that list. Without Hakim Ziyech, who was rested, Chelsea ran a long way today against Southampton, who had taken the lead after a wonderful free kick from James Ward-Prowse.

Noni Madueke, who came over from PSV last month, had a basic place at Chelsea, which is currently in tenth place in the ranking.
