Serious storms were expected in southern Germany for the evening. The international match of the DFB team is also affected. Players and spectators in the stadium react.

Before the kick-off of the Nations League semi-final between Germany and Portugal on Wednesday evening, violent storms also reached the Munich Allianz Arena. The start of the game was postponed from 9 p.m. to 9:10 p.m.

T-online reporter Benjamin Zurmühl reported directly from the stadium, a good three-quarters of an hour before the game kicked off first used heavy rains that went over the Nieder stadium. Spectators have fled to empty ranks that were not affected by the water masses. A short time later, hail started. The goalkeepers of both teams, who were already working on the lawn at the time, ran straight back into the cabin, looking for protection there.

It had already been feared that the weather might change – because strong storms were predicted for large parts of southern Germany. According to the German Weather Service, violent thunderstorms were expected in Bavaria from the afternoon. The focus of the storm should be between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. – that is, immediately before the start of the game. The meteorologists warn with heavy rain, gusts of wind and hail. Hailcorns could be up to five centimeters in size. It has now occurred.

A large storm had already developed over southern Germany on Wednesday afternoon. According to the meteorologist Jan Schenk, it is a so -called mesoskaly convective system (MCS), which is composed of several thunderstorm cells and can achieve an enormous extension. “It couldn’t be more dangerous,” says the meteorologist’s assessment (you can read more about this here).

Heavy rain, hail and gusts of wind – but when it comes to UEFA, the game should be kicked off as intended. At least stood now. The association said in advance that the weather situation was observed together with the responsible authorities. In the afternoon there was no reason to shake at the planned start of the game at 9:00 p.m. (in the live ticker at T-Online).

Spectators on site were asked to adjust to rain and bring the appropriate clothing. Rain ponchos and jackets are recommended, the organizer said. Now it turned out that this note was correct.
