With Kyler Murray, the Minnesota Vikings brought an experienced second quarterback into the team to ensure quality on offense, should JJ McCarthy confirm his manageable impression from the last NFL season. Now the team is continuing to set the course for the future.

As interim general manager Rob Brzezinski confirmed Monday in Phoenix, the franchise will exercise the fifth-year option on Jordan Addison’s rookie contract. As a result, the wide receiver is now under contract through the 2027 season. A salary of $2.6 million is planned for 2026, and around $18 million the following year.

“He is a hugely important player for us and a real difference player,” said Brzezinski.

Addison, selected 23rd in the 2023 draft, has quickly established himself as a reliable option in the Vikings offense – especially alongside star receiver Justin Jefferson.

Within his draft class, Addison leads the statistics in touchdown catches (22), and he also ranks fifth in passes caught (175) and yards per game (52.1).

Will peace return to Addison?

Whether an even longer-term agreement becomes realistic will depend on Addison’s non-sporting activities. Addison has had several off-field incidents since entering the NFL.

Already in July 2023 he was stopped for excessive speed (around 225 km/h). A year later, he was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving near Los Angeles. The process ended with an agreement, including probation and a fine. The NFL also imposed a three-game suspension.

Another January incident in Tampa (trespassing) was later dropped. Additionally, Addison was penalized internally after missing a team event.

The Vikings now have to weigh up when and whether to offer their talented but controversial receiver a long-term contract.
