VfL Wolfsburg’s Niko Kovac criticizes many Bundesliga coach changes

Will take over Wolfsburg from July

The future Wolfsburg head coach Niko Kovac has criticized the many coach changes in the Bundesliga. “It’s a trend that I think is going in the wrong direction. It’s not usual that you expect success and change players or coaches every six months or a year,” said Kovac in one “Sky” interview.

The 50-year-old benefits at VfL from the fact that the club has parted ways with Mark van Bommel and Florian Kohfeldt in recent months. However, Kovac believes “continuity is a very important factor. If you look at many successful clubs – not only in Germany – you can see that continuity is very important and that you have to strengthen the coach these days because he is held responsible for everything”. Including the relegated Greuther Fürth and Arminia Bielefeld, eight Bundesliga clubs will change coaches at the end of the season, including runners-up BVB and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

After successful years at Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayern Munich, Kovac returned to the Bundesliga last Tuesday by signing a three-year deal with VfL Wolfsburg. “What was important for me: the cooperation,” he explained with regard to the sporting leadership of Lower Saxony – as a coach you are only as strong as you are made by your superiors. “I know Jörg Schmadtke from the Leverkusen days, we played together and we always had a very good connection. Marcel Schäfer was also a footballer himself and won the championship with VfL. It’s a small circle of people with football know-how.”

Niko Kovac wants to “put the foreground” on unity at VfL Wolfsburg

In Wolfsburg, Kovac wants to “put the focus” on “unity” again next season. After qualifying for the 2020/21 Champions League, the “Wolves” had spent most of the season in the bottom half of the table, finishing in a disappointing twelfth place. “We have to create something that makes us strong. It can’t be easy to get points against us. Order and discipline are prerequisites for me. But it’s also important to me that players have certain freedoms. I like to turn a blind eye, maybe two. But everything has to fit into the context: we have to deliver,” said Kovac.
