“Wolves” before a new lineup
After relegation: Wolfsburg wants to promote Hecking

VfL is exploring the personnel situation for the coming season in the 2nd Bundesliga. The relegation coach is probably intended for an important position.
The shock of the first Bundesliga relegation has barely passed when there are the first reports about the new personnel line-up at VfL Wolfsburg. The Lower Saxony team apparently wants to promote their previous coach Dieter Hecking to sports director. The “Kicker” and the “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung” report this unanimously.

The background is that, according to media reports, the preferred candidates Marcel Schäfer (RB Leipzig) and Fabian Wohlgemuth (VfB Stuttgart) cannot be obtained. Hecking, on the other hand, is not blamed internally for the first Bundesliga relegation in the club’s history. As the coach of the 2015 cup winning team, he enjoys a high level of recognition in Wolfsburg.
Post vacant since Christian-Aus
The 61-year-old only returned in March, when VfL was still in a direct relegation zone. He also managed to stabilize the ailing team up until the two relegation games against SC Paderborn (0-0 and 1-2 after extra time).
Those responsible in Wolfsburg appreciate the clear communication of the long-time Bundesliga coach. Another argument in favor of Hecking’s promotion is that he was the sports director of 1. FC Nürnberg from 2020 to 2024 and therefore knows the 2nd Bundesliga well. The position of sports director at VfL has been vacant since Peter Christiansen was released in March.
Wolfsburg was promoted to the top German league in the 1997/98 season and remained in relegation there for 29 years despite a few close seasons and victories. Now it’s probably about direct promotion again in 2026/27.
