Setback in training

VfL Wolfsburg, threatened with relegation, will have to do without captain Maximilian Arnold in the final stretch of the season. The Wolves’ record player has had problems in his groin area for weeks. On Sunday, the 31-year-old “suffered a setback during training, so we decided together in consultation with the doctors, also with a view to the new season, that it would be better to take him out completely,” explained coach Dieter Hecking.
In the 2-1 win at Union Berlin almost a week and a half ago, Arnold made his 400th Bundesliga appearance for Lower Saxony as a substitute. This season, the midfielder appeared in 27 games and contributed one goal and four assists. However, he was occasionally not part of the squad due to groin problems.
“Anyone who knows me knows how hard it is for me to no longer be able to help the team in this difficult phase,” said Arnold. “Despite my rehabilitation program, I will be close to the team to continue to support them in our common goal of staying in the league.” In 2009 Arnold moved to the VfL youth team. In November of last year he extended his contract again until June 2028.
