No decision has yet been made about the future of coach Paul Simonis at Bundesliga soccer club VfL Wolfsburg. After seven defeats in eight games, there are many signs that the Dutchman will be fired. Sports director Sebastian Schindzielorz and managing director Peter Christiansen are also criticized.
After the 1-2 defeat on Friday evening at northern rivals Werder Bremen, Schindzielorz – unlike in previous weeks – avoided a clear commitment to Simonis, who has been under pressure for a long time.
“I ask for your understanding that I don’t want to say anything about it shortly after the game. We’re going back now and then we’ll see what happens next,” explained the ex-professional, whose future at VfL is also uncertain. “I’m trying to do my job as best I can. If there is other information, I will receive it. So far I haven’t received it.”
The day after the bankruptcy in Bremen, the training ground in Wolfsburg was deserted. Only Yannick Gerhardt and Lovro Majer, who were recently injured, did a few laps. Nobody from the executive floor showed up either. According to NDR information, no more decisions will be announced on Saturday.
Christiansen: “I would like to continue”
In addition to Simonis and Schindzielorz, sports director Peter Christiansen is also criticized for the 2009 champions. The Dane didn’t want to say anything more after the Bremen game, but spoke to the TV station “Sky” before kick-off. “If people don’t want Peter Christiansen here anymore, the supervisory board will come and tell us. That’s fine with me. I want to continue and work like that,” Christiansen explained. He knows that he bears responsibility for the situation. “That’s the case when you’re in this role, of course.”
Will the Wolfsburg supervisory board ensure a completely new beginning?
The supervisory board around chairman Sebastian Rudolph and influential member Diego Benaglio will now put their heads together and discuss possible personnel decisions. It does not seem impossible that after years of sporting sadness there will be a big bang on the Mittelland Canal and the committee will decide to relieve not only coach Simonis, but also Christensen and Schindzielorz of their duties.
The following international break would be the best time for such a drastic measure, as it would give the supervisory board the opportunity to find replacements for the officials.
Or can Simonis even continue despite only two successes in eleven Bundesliga games? The Dutchman hasn’t given up yet. “I believe that we will have the opportunity to do better together,” said the 40-year-old at the press conference after the Bremen game.
