They are among the team’s figureheads, but it is now clear: Jule Brand and Merle Frohms will no longer play for VfL Wolfsburg from next season.
VfL Wolfsburg has to let go of two top performers after the season. Both national player Jule Brand and former DFB goalkeeper Merle Frohms will not extend their expiring contracts, as the DFB Cup winner confirmed at the request of the SID. It is still unclear where the two will move to.
According to media reports, the 22-year-old Brand, who came to Wolfsburg from TSG Hoffenheim in 2022, is the focus of English first division club Manchester City. A move to FC Bayern also doesn’t seem out of the question.
According to information from “Kicker”, Merle Frohms is set to move abroad. The 29-year-old VfL goalkeeper returned to the club in 2022 after previously playing for SC Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt for two years.
She surprisingly announced her retirement from the national team in September 2024. At the Olympic Games in Paris, she had previously been put on the bench by then national coach Horst Hrubesch. Ann-Katrin Berger was again given preference over Frohms.
There is already speculation about the successor in the Wolfsburg goal. Sophia Winkler (SGS Essen, contract until summer 2026) and Stina Johannes (Eintracht Frankfurt, contract until summer 2025) are considered possible new additions.
VfL has already made provisions for the offensive. Australian Sharn Freier (23) was recently confirmed as a new addition for next season.
