After VfB-Aus in November
Sven Mislintat is about to sign as technical director at Dutch record champions Ajax Amsterdam. The 50-year-old would have agreed after several discussions with the club, reported sky on Thursday. A contract has not yet been signed, but that is only a matter of time. The Dutch newspaper “De Telegraaf” had already reported on the interest last week.
Ajax was not only in the headlines because of the badly endangered title defense, but also because of clear criticism from interim coach Johnny Heitinga, who referred to the short planning time until the coming season. “You can feel the turmoil. It’s time for clarity for everyone,” Heitinga said recently. The Amsterdamers are on the lookout for a successor to Marc Overmars, who left early last year after cross-conduct. According to reports, several talks have been held with Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward, who is leaving the Reds at the end of the season. The 41-year-old is said to have informed managing director Edwin van der Sar that he was not available.
Mislintat was sporting director for VfB Stuttgart until November and, since joining in April 2019, has developed a reputation for preferring young and viable players when it comes to newcomers – a tactic on the transfer market that Ajax have also been pursuing for years. Even as a scout at BVB, he had shown a flair for top talent. Among other things, discrepancies with managing director Alexander Wehrle are said to have caused the Swabians to end.
