VfB Stuttgart was rewarded late for a committed performance against FC Augsburg and celebrated their second home win of the season in the Bundesliga with a 2-1 (1-1) win. Florian Niederlechner put FCA ahead four minutes early, while Serhou Guirassy (15) equalized for Stuttgart. Waldemar Anton let VfB celebrate in injury time.

Stuttgart had to come to terms with the deficit early on: After four minutes, Dan-Axel Zagadou let himself be duped by Niederlechner on a long pass – he lobbed the shot into the short corner for the lead. Only eleven minutes later, VfB hit back with the first good attack. Guirassy headed in Sosa’s cross from five yards out.

The guests were lucky that Carlos Gruezo, who had already been warned, was not sent off (30′). Stuttgart had more chances in the penalty areas: Luca Pfeiffer (33′) and Silas (37’/45′) missed good chances. Augsburg came forward less often, but also dangerously: Mergim Berisha tested VfB goalkeeper Florian Müller with the best chance with a volley (21st).

Anton rewards Stuttgart’s final offensive

After the change of sides, Augsburg’s Berisha caused danger for the first time with a free kick (46′). The guests now had more grip than the home side, who had lost their momentum from the final minutes of the first half.

Then VfB recovered: Endo had the lead upside down, but Niederlechner saved from the line (71′). “We were a bit exhausted at the end and they put on incredible pressure”explained the Augsburg striker.

VfB didn’t seem flat at all in the closing stages: Guirassy shot just over the box (75′), 60 seconds later his overhead kick landed on the goal net. Four minutes before the end, the crossbar got in the way of Pfeiffer’s header.

Shortly thereafter, FCA keeper Tomas Koubek made a sensational save from Anton and Pfeiffer (89’/90′). But even Koubek was powerless against Anton’s shot in added time.
