Former national goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand looked back at VfB Stuttgart in the early 2000s in the Transfermarkt podcast “Done Deals” – and in the process set up his personal Swabian dream team. With Fernando Meira, Mario Gómez, Cacau and Pavel Pardo, among others, there are four players from the legendary champion team of the 2006/07 season.
Of course, the VfB legends Krasimir Balakov and Zvonimir Soldo should not be missing in the line-up of the 301-times Bundesliga player, as well as the 2014 world champions, Sami Khedira and Philipp Lahm. Hildebrand’s dream eleven is completed by attacker Kevin Kuranyi, who contributed 57 goals and 26 assists in the shirt with the chest ring between 2001 and 2005 and is still one of the top scorers in the club’s history, and defensive giant Marcelo Bordon.
Podcast “Done Deals”: Hildebrand about the young wild ones from VfB Stuttgart
At the beginning of the 2000s, VfB Stuttgart was caught in the mediocrity of the Bundesliga. Expensive transfers to knock back up the table were not possible, however, due to financial problems. Coach Felix Magath therefore made a virtue out of necessity and relied above all on up-and-coming talent – the birth of the “Junge Wilden”. Players like Kevin Kuranyi, Philipp Lahm and Aleksandr Hleb gained trust and repaid it with a performance. Timo Hildebrand was there from the start.
In the Transfermarkt podcast Done Deals, the former goalkeeper reports on the change in the Swabians, from the relegation battle to the title and working under the most diverse types of coaches – listen in now Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Amazon Music.
